General Classes

Classes at Yoga Loka emphasize the flow from one asana to the next, and building the connection of breath and movement into a meditative focus. Vinyasa is an integral part of the class, that is the connection of one pose to the other thru awareness of movement and breath. There is also an emphasis on yoga philosophy and the connection of the physical practice as we know it with the ancient history of yoga, in all its many facets.

Level I classes focus on the basic foundations of the hatha yoga practice - alignment, breathwork and deep relaxation. They are our most gentle and nurturing classes and set a strong foundation for all other classes. They are suitable for beginners and experienced practioners.  In Level II classes students begin to fine tune their ability to flow  from one asana to the next while focusing on alignment and precision.  Many instructions are given to aid the student have a safe and enjoyable class. Level III classes continue to build some heat and allows the student drop into the experience of a harmonious flow  with more emphasis on creating a continum of movement while exploring variations of the basic asanas.

Specialized classes

GENTLE YOGA:

A slow paced class that is designed for maximum relaxtion setting the stage for release.  This is a perfect entry into yoga for those students who are coming into asana practice later in life, or have injury or illness.

ASHTANGA:

The Ashtanga Primary series as set down by Sri Patabi Jois is a set series of asanas that are designed to build heat, clear the nervous system, detoxify the body, and clear the mind.  The foundation of the Ashtanga practice is the use of Uyjic Breath and application of the Bandhas.  Poses are joined thru vinyasa.  Our Ashtanga class, led by Jacqui Crown is designed to familiarize students with the Primary series thru detailed alignment and connection to the Uyjic Breath.  This is a powerful class that sets the stage for a deeper connection to your body and your inner spirit.  It is not suitable for people new to Asana practice.

MEDITATION:

The asana, or physical, part of the yoga practice was developed to allow yogis to sit comfortably in meditation. Then it was understood that asanas played an important part in transformation in and by themselves. Meditation practice is an opportunity to experience these two complimentary practices back to back, and therefore further absorb the effects of your asana practice. However, you do not need to have attended the asana class to participate in the meditation. No experience is required- this class is for all levels of meditators, from absolute beginners (simple instructions will be given) to long-time practitioners.   A beautiful way to learn some tools for relaxation, reduce stress, and participate in the yoga community. (There is no charge for this class.)
